‘Mika Tajima – Negative Entropy (Digital Ocean, NYC2, 4U, NAS, Pink, Quad), 2018 Definitions of a portrait – in the statement the artist considers this work an abstract portrait of a place, which is in itself a stretch from the norm. She portrays the place through an abstracted visual representation that is informed from data she has collected about the place. She has translated a punch card from a digital photo of the data center, and interleaved it with a woven digital spectrogram image that was created with recorded audio from the place. This work brings questions as to what defines a place in the mind – is it the visual and auditory experience? Or is it something less definable – something that transcends the data Tajima uses.
Josef Albers – Six Works from Homage to the Square, 1967 In his squares, that now number into the thousands, Albers questions what defines something as a completed work of art, vs. an exploration of a methodology. He has set guidelines for himself in the composition, but allowed the variable to be his choosing of colors, and the visual interactions between these colors.

Ian Cheng – Baby feat. Ikaria, 2013 In this work, Cheng displays a conversation between AI chatbots by letting their voices animate moving bits of colored debris on a large screen. As these pieces move, their voices are heard by the viewer – their conversations growing at times quite absurd. It is interesting to consider the visual flow of a conversation, especially conversation that lacks a certain level of social intelligence that seems necessary to maintain decorum.
